In March, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation partnered with seven colleges and universities (Colgate University, Wellesley College, University of Virginia, Radford University, Appalachian State University, University of North Carolina at Asheville, and Western Carolina University) to conduct dark sky field research along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Teams of professors and students traveled the Parkway over several nights, stopping at overlooks to conduct sky quality surveys (i.e., how dark is the night sky?). These efforts will help identify the best dark sky locations along the Parkway to guide both dark sky conservation efforts and “astrotourism.”
